To inform the development of the draft New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy, the Ministry of Health commissioned a series of reports exploring a range of social explanations for the trends in New Zealand's suicide rates to 1999, and a review of the suicide research literature.- Social Explanations for Suicide in New Zealand (2005)
A suite of five reports, and a sixth summary report, has been produced as part of a contract the Ministry of Health held with the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences between 2001 and 2004. - Suicide Prevention - A review of evidence of risk and protective factors, and points of effective intervention (2005)
By Annette Beautrais et al concludes that while a wide range of personal, social, family and related factors contribute to the risks of suicidal behaviour, by far the largest factor was related to mental health.
