A Population-based Longitudinal Study of Risk Factors for Suicide Attempts in Major Depressive Disorder
Bolton JM, Pagura J, Enns MW, Grant B, Sareen J. 2010. Journal of Psychiatric Research.
The objective of this study was to investigate baseline sociodemographic characteristics, comorbid mental disorders, specific depressive symptoms, and previous suicidal behavior as potential risk factors for suicide attempts at three years follow-up. Findings suggest that mental illness comorbidity confers an increased risk of future suicide attempts in major depressive disorder that is not solely accounted for by past suicidal behavior.- View

Achieving Standardised Reporting of Suicide in Australia: Rationale and Program for Change
De Leo, D., Dudley, M., Aebersold, C., Mendoza, J., Barnes, M., Harrison, J., & Ranson, D. (2010). Medical Journal of Australia, 192(8), 452-6.
Suicide and intentional self-harm are issues of major importance in public health and public policy, with rates widely used as progress indicators in these areas. Accurate statistics are vital for appropriately targeted prevention strategies and research, costing of suicide and to combat associated stigma. A systemic coordinated program should address current inaccuracies, and social stigma about suicide and self-harm must be tackled if widespread underreporting is to stop.

Antidepressant Discontinuation and Risk of Suicide Attempt: A Retrospective, Nested Case-Control Study
Robert J. Valuck, Heather D. Orton, and Anne M. Libby
J Clin Psychiatry 2009;70(8):1069–1077
NZ Psychiatry Review 17: "Comment: This important article helps us to understand and reconcile opposing points of view regarding antidepressant effects on suicidality. While carefully analysed case series had been the mainstay of evidence that antidepressants could produce this seemingly ironic effect, the present report comes to the same conclusion through the use of epidemiological techniques. This study is likely to have forensic implications as well, especially in the USA."- View

Antidepressants and Suicide Risk: How Did Specific Information in FDA Safety Warnings Affect Treatment Patterns?
Busch SH, Frank RG, Leslie DL, Martin A, Rosenheck RA, Martin EG, Barry CL. Psychiatric Services, 61(1):11-6.
From June 2003 through October 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released five safety warnings related to antidepressant use and the increased risk of suicidality for children. Although researchers have documented a decline in antidepressant use among children over this period, less is known about whether specific safety information conveyed in individual warnings was reflected in treatment patterns. Release of specific risk and benefit information by the FDA was associated with changes in prescribing but not in outpatient follow-up.
These results suggest that the FDA plays an important role in communicating information to the public and providers. Yet, although public health safety warnings were associated with changes in some practice patterns, not all recommendations conveyed in warnings were followed.- View

Bad Boys and Sad Girls? Examining Internalising and Externalising Effects on Parasuicides Among Youth
Tracey Peter and Lance W. Roberts. 2009. Journal of Youth and Adolescence 1573-6601.
The main objective of the research is to determine whether or not there are significant sex differences between internalizing and externalizing influences on suicidal behavior. Results show that both suicidal ideation and attempt are more frequent for girls compared to boys. Contrary to expectations, externalizing problems had a greater impact on girls and internalizing problems had a marginally greater impact on boys. This casts doubt on the notion that “bad boys” and “sad girls” are at greater risk for suicidal behavior.- View

Cross-national Analysis of the Associations Between Traumatic Events and Suicidal Behaviour: Findings from the WHO World Mental Health Surveys
Stein, D., Chiu, W., Hwang, I., Kessler, R., Sampson, N., Alonso, J., Borges, G. et al. (2010). PLoS One, 5(5).
This study indicates that the association between traumatic events and suicidal behaviour is fairly consistent across developed and developing countries. These data reinforce the importance of psychological trauma as a major public health problem, and highlight the significance of screening for the presence and accumulation of traumatic exposures as a risk factor for suicide ideation and attempt.- View

Internet-Based and Other Computerised Psychological Treatments for Adult Depression: A Meta-Analysis
Gerhard Andersson and Pim Cuijpers. 2009. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, 38(4) 196 - 205.
Computerized and, more recently, Internet-based treatments for depression have been developed and tested in controlled trials. The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the effects of these treatments and investigate characteristics of studies that may be related to the effects. In particular, the authors were interested in the role of personal support when completing a computerized treatment. The authors conclude that although more studies are needed, Internet and other computerized treatments hold promise as potentially evidence-based treatments of depression.- View

Major Depressive Disorder Treatment Guidelines in America and Europe
Davidson, J. (2010). Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 71 Suppl E1:e04.
The various major American and European guidelines for the treatment of depression provide similar basic principles of treatment. While the guidelines are all evidence-based, certain factors can influence differences in specific recommendations. The similarities and differences among 6 sets of guidelines from Europe and the Americas published in the past decade are reviewed here.
In the guidelines, mild depression has the most variance in treatment recommendations; some, but not all, guidelines suggest that it may resolve with exercise or watchful waiting, but psychotherapy or antidepressants could be used if initial efforts fail. Moderate and severe major depression carry broadly similar recommendations among the guidelines. First-line treatment recommendations for moderate major depressive disorder include antidepressant monotherapy, psychotherapy, and the combination of both. Severe depression may require the combination of an antidepressant and an antipsychotic, electroconvulsive therapy, or the combination of an antidepressant and psychotherapy.- View

Overcoming The Fear of Lethal Injury: Evaluating Suicidal Behavior in the Military Through the Lens of the Interpersonal–Psychological Theory of Suicide
Edward A. Selby, Michael D. Anestis, Theodore W. Bender, Jessica D. Ribeiro, Matthew K. Nock, M. David Rudd, Craig J. Bryan, Ingrid C. Lim, Monty T. Baker, Peter M. Gutierrez and Thomas E. Joiner Jr. (2010). Clinical Psychology Review ,30(3), 298-307.
It is vital that efforts be made to advance suicide risk assessment techniques and treatment for members of the military who may be experiencing suicidal symptoms. Findings suggest that although there are many important factors in military suicide, the acquired capability may be the most impacted by military experience because combat exposure and training may cause habituation to fear of painful experiences, including suicide.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Suicide Risk: A Systematic Review
Krysinska, K., Lester, D. 2010. Archives of Suicide Research, 14(1), 1-23.
There is a gap in the literature regarding suicide risk among traumatized individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and this article aims to systematically review literature on the relationship between PTSD and suicidal behavior and ideation. The evidence indicates that there is an association between PTSD and suicidality with several factors, such as concurrent depression and the pre-trauma psychiatric condition, possibly mediating this relationship.- View

Precipitating Circumstances of Suicide Among Women of Reproductive Age in 16 U.S. States, 2003–2007
LaVonne A.G. Ortega, Debra Karch. Journal of Women's Health. January 2010, 19(1): 5-7. Findings indicate that to prevent suicide in women of reproductive age, multiple approaches should be taken, including but not limited to appropriate and effective mental health treatment, access to support systems, familial education in recognizing the signs of suicide, and understanding the options available to get help for someone at risk.- View

Prison Suicide in 12 Countries: An Ecological Study of 861 Suicides During 2003-2007
Fazel S, Grann M, Kling B, Hawton K. 2010. Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. Although suicide rates among prisoners are high and vary between countries, it is uncertain whether this reflects the importation of risk from the general population or is associated with incarceration rates. Results of this study show that rates of prison suicide do not reflect general population suicide rates, suggesting that variations in prison suicide rates reflect differences in criminal justice systems including, possibly, the provision of psychiatric care in prison.- View

Reporting of Suicide in New Zealand Media - Content and Case Study Analysis
McKenna, B., Thom, K., Edwards, G., Nairn, R., O’Brien, A. & Leary, I. (2010). Centre for Mental Health Research, The University of Auckland, Auckland: Te Pou.
This study investigated media reporting of suicide behaviour in New Zealand. The researchers have produced a description of the type, content and quality of reporting in newspaper, broadcasting, television and internet excerpts published in a 12 month period. Five case studies were examined in further depth to explore aspects of media content that may lead audiences to draw specific conclusions about the suicide event.
The information collected can be used to support the implementation of the Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2008-2012 (Ministry of Health, 2008) and the effectiveness of the Ministry of Health guidelines on suicide reporting.- View

Risk Management in Mental Health: Applying Lessons From Commercial Aviation
Hatcher, S. 2010. Australasian Psychiatry, 18(1). Risk management in mental health focuses on risks in patients and fails to predict rare but catastrophic events such as suicide. Commercial aviation has a similar task in preventing rare but catastrophic accidents. This article describes the systems in place in commercial aviation that allows that industry to prevent disasters and contrasts this with the situation in mental health.- View

Sports Participation as a Protective Factor Against Depression and Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents as Mediated by Self-Esteem and Social Support
Journal of Developmental and Behavioural Pediatrics. 2009 Aug 18.
Participation in sports has been shown to be protective against depression and suicidal ideation, but little is known about what factors mediate these relationships. No previous studies examined potential mediators between sports participation and suicidal ideation and only one study explored possible mediators between sports participation and depression. Increased sports participation could protect against depression and suicidal ideation by increasing endogenous endorphin levels, boosting self-esteem, improving body image, increasing social support, and affecting substance abuse. Adolescents should be offered ample opportunity and encouragement to participate in sports, which can protect against depression and suicidal ideation by boosting self-esteem and increasing social support.- View

Suicide and the Media: A Study of the Media Response
Jim Tully and Nadia Elsaka, School of Political Science and Communication, University of Canterbury, April 2004.
"This 32 page study was undertaken to examine the media's response to the Ministry of Health (MOH) produced resource on the reporting and portrayal of suicide in the media in 1999. This study aimed to scope the awareness of media professionals about suicide reporting guidelines developed by the MOH in 1998 and 1999; to identify the media’s issues and concerns about the use of guidelines; and to identify a means of addressing those concerns".- View

Suicide Assessment Part 1: Uncovering Suicidal Intent - A Sophisticated Art
Shawn Christopher Shea. 2009. Psychiatric Times 26(12).
A sound suicide assessment approach or protocol is made up of 3 components:
• Gathering information related to risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs of suicide.
• Collecting information related to the patient’s suicidal ideation, planning, behaviors, desire, and intent.
• Making a clinical formulation of risk based on these 2 databases.- View

Shawn Christopher Shea. 2009. Psychiatric Times 26(12).
The CASE Approach is a flexible, practical, and easily learned interviewing strategy for eliciting suicidal ideation, planning, behavior, desire, and intent. It was developed to help the clinician explore both the patient’s inner pain and the suicidal planning that often reflects this pain.- View

Suicide in Recently Released Prisoners: A Case-control Study
Psychological Medicine. 2009 Sep 1:1-9.
Recently released prisoners are at markedly higher risk of suicide than the general population. The aim of this study was to identify key risk factors for suicide by offenders released from prisons in England and Wales.MethodAll suicides committed by offenders within 12 months of their release from prison in England and Wales, between 2000 and 2002, were identified. One control matched on gender and date of release from prison was recruited for each case. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression modelling identified key independent risk factors for suicide. There is a need to improve the continuity of care for people who are released from prison and for community health, offender and social care agencies to coordinate care for these vulnerable individuals.- View

Suicide Inquiry in Primary Care: Creating Context, Inquiring, and Following Up
Steven D. Vannoy, Tonya Fancher, Caitlyn Meltvedt, Jürgen Unützer, Paul Duberstein, and Richard L. Kravitz. 2010. Annals of Family Medicine 8:33-39. This research describes the vocabulary and narrative context of primary care physicians’ inquiries about suicide. Although most suicide inquiries by primary care physicians are sensitive, clear, and supportive, some language is used that may inhibit suicide disclosure. Some physician responses may unintentionally reinforce patients for remaining silent about their risk. This study will inform future research in the development of quality improvement interventions to support primary care physicians in making clear, appropriate, and sensitive inquires about suicide.- View

Suicide Prevention by Limiting Access to Methods: A Review of Theory and Practice
Florentine, J.B., Crane, C. 2010. Social Science and Medicine, 12 Feb 2010.
This review discusses the limitation of access to suicide methods as a way to prevent suicide, an approach which forms a major component of many national suicide prevention strategies. An important distinction is made between efforts that attempt to limit physical access to suicide methods and those that attempt to reduce the cognitive availability of suicide.
It is concluded that in appropriate contexts, where substitution is less likely to occur, and in conjunction with psychosocial prevention efforts, limitation of both physical and cognitive access to suicide can be an effective suicide prevention strategy.- View

The Association Between Relationship Markers of Sexual Orientation and Suicide: Denmark, 1990–2001
Robin M. Mathy, Susan D. Cochran , Jorn Olsen and Vickie M. Mays. 2009. Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology 1433-9285.
Minority sexual orientation has been repeatedly linked to elevated rates of suicide attempts. Whether this translates into greater risk for suicide mortality is unclear. We investigated sexual orientation-related differences in suicide mortality in Denmark during the initial 12-year period following legalization of same-sex registered domestic partnerships (RDPs).
Results showed suicide risk appears greatly elevated for men in same-sex partnerships in Denmark. To what extent this is true for similar gay and bisexual men who are not in such relationships is unknown, but these findings call for targeted suicide prevention programs aimed at reducing suicide risk among gay and bisexual men.- View

The Cost of Suicide to Society
O'Dea D and Tucker S. 2005. The Cost of Suicide to Society. Wellington: Ministry of Health
The Cost of Suicide report estimates the cost of the 460 suicides and 5095 attempted suicides in 2002 to total $1,381,492,000 - nearly $1.4 billion. Each suicide was estimated to cost a total of $2,931,250.
The report breaks down the total into economic and non-economic costs. Economic costs include services used in cases of suicide and attempted suicide, and production lost due to people exiting or being absent from the workforce. The economic cost of each suicide is put at $448,250, and the non-economic cost at $2,483,000.
The Cost of Suicide report updates and extends previous research carried out in 1995 by Coggan, Fanslow and Norton. The work by Coggan et al has been extended by constructing estimates of Disability-adjusted Life-Years (DALYS) lost as a result of suicide or attempted suicide. Overall an estimated 19,218 potential future life years were lost due to suicides occurring in 2002.

Winder Foundation Charitable Trust
Winder Foundation works in partnership with youth, their families, schools and communities, with a special focus on boys. We aim to get to the heart of emotional, behavioral, social or educational issues, equipping boys with tools for self-empowerment, self-discovery and self-direction. Our children are the seeds of our future. We view the most promising and sustainable solution to the great hurdles in our society to be new approaches to child-centered learning, leadership and life skills.
We work to support young men, aged from seven upwards, to become strong, healthy and fit in mind, body and spirit – preparing them for adulthood, parenthood, leadership and life.- View
