SPINZ National Symposium 2009. Culture and suicide prevention in Aotearoa. Nau te rourou, naku te rourou. Ka ora ai nga iwi. We each contribute to the health of the people. Mercure Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, 10-11 September 2009

Welcome

Kia ora koutou

SPINZ warmly invites you to the 2-day symposium Culture and Suicide Prevention in Aotearoa - this is your chance to increase your knowledge and understanding of effective suicide prevention approaches in our modern, diverse society.

If you work with Māori or other cultures, take this opportunity to foster mana-enhancing relationships and be part of the creation of better health outcomes in Aotearoa/New Zealand!

We open the event with a Māori welcome, or powhiri, at Pipitea Marae and follow with our key note addresses from internationally recognised speakers, Professor Mason Durie and Dr Tracy Westerman.

Later, at the Mercure Hotel, we will provide a great line up of presenters, refreshments and a symposium reception featuring local artists to allow you to relax and network with presenters and colleagues.

Come and learn more about:

  • Culturally appropriate suicide prevention approaches.
  • Suicide rates, risk and protective factors among Māori.
  • Safe practice in suicide prevention across cultures.
  • Building evaluation into your work, with a view to contributing to the evidence base of working effectively with Māori and other cultures.

This sympoisum will appeal to a wide range of people working in mental health, and we urge you all to attend! Keep an eye on the website for updates as they happen.

The SPINZ team looks forward to seeing you in Wellington in September.

Mauri ora
