SPINZ Events

Each year SPINZ offers specific events that focus on advancing suicide prevention work in Aotearoa New Zealand. These events are held to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September each year.

National Suicide Prevention Symposium

The purpose of this biennial symposium is to provide high quality suicide prevention information to a broad range of stakeholders who contribute to the suicide prevention sector.

This includes those people working in central government agencies such as health, social development, police, ACC, corrections, justice, education, internal affairs, as well as non-government organisations such as iwi and social services, community groups, businesses, volunteers and others.

Each symposium has a specific theme determined by a working group of stakeholders. However, the programme format usually includes presentations from international and local researchers and experts, as well as local service providers working in suicide prevention research, policy, initiatives and activities.

We will be holding our next national symposium in September 2009. Watch our website for information on the theme, location, submission of abstracts and other important information.

You can search for presentations given at previous SPINZ symposiums (2002-2007) in our Resource Finder.

Seminar Series

Every alternate year to the symposium, SPINZ organizes a series of seminars linked to the theme of the international World Suicide Prevention Day. The seminars are held in different regions, although the format is flexible.

Our first seminar series was delivered in 2008. The international theme was ‘Think globally. Plan nationally. Act locally'. Our complementary theme was ‘The Role of Media in Suicide Prevention'.
